Meet the Animals and Rare Breeds
A Rare Breeds Farm
In January 2007, Home Farm was awarded Rare Breeds
Accreditation by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST) - the
leading conservation charity working to restore Britain’s native
livestock breeds. It is one of only 17 farm parks in the UK to have
received the award which recognises their commitment to the
conservation, breeding and promotion of rare or endangered breeds
of farm animals.
The farm had to meet various criteria, involving not only the
livestock, but the standards of the premises, the knowledge of the
staff and detailed examination of pedigree records, movement
information and health requirements.
It now has to sustain two viable breeding units as part of its
commitment to Rare Breeds and has chosen to concentrate on Tamworth
pigs and Red Poll cattle. Our Tamworth sow Tallulah had her
first litter of pure bred piglets in March 2008, enabling us to
increase the numbers of this endangered breed.
The six breeding cows in the Red Poll breed will help to sustain
what is considered one of the original native dual purpose breeds
due to its dairy and beef qualities.
In May 2007 the Farm welcomed a flock of Leicester Longwool
sheep. This is a very attractive breed which was developed during
the late 18th century
Meet the Animals
Our pig herd comprises of six rare breeds that are on the Rare
Breeds Survival Trust (RBST) watch list: the Tamworth, Large Black,
Middle White, Berkshire, Saddleback and Gloucestershire Old Spot.
Each individual has their own unique personality making them all
great characters. You may even be lucky enough to see a newborn
litter when you visit!!’
We have four beautiful Heavy horses here at
the farm. They are all Clydesdales which is a rare breed
originating from Scotland. Finn is our 13 year old
gelding, a real character and well known for his cheeky sense of
humour…..it’s no surprise his birthday is April Fool’s Day!
Blossom is our 13 year old brood mare who up to now has had 4 foals
in total, one of which is Tabitha who has remained here on the farm
to join the horse family. She too became a mum for the first
time in 2012 when she was 4 years old and proved to be a real
natural. Last but certainly not least is Grey Friar who was
born in 2010, a handsome looking gentleman who definitely likes to
think he’s the boss!
We were delighted to welcome our newest addition, donkey foal
‘Huw’ into the world in September 2012. 12 year old Mum
‘Seren’ gave birth to him and she certainly excels at
motherhood. Huw is full of fun and mischief and certainly
keeps his Auntie ‘Frosty’ on her hoof tips!! We have
everything crossed that Frosty herself is in foal for the very
first time this year……watch this space!
These are a real favourite with the visitors due to their
cheeky personalities! Often referred to as the missing link between
farm animals and pets, Lewis, Binti, Jasmine and the rest of their
four legged friends enjoy the attention of the visitors who are
able to buy goat food from the shop to feed them. We also
acquired four Angora goats in 2009, three does and one
buck. They have been a fantastic addition to the ever
expanding goat family!
We have expanded our Red Poll herd now to
incorporate our very own traditional native Dairy herd with a view
to carrying out milking demonstrations in Summer. This
includes a Dairy Shorthorn, a Jersey, Guernsey and Ayrshire
cow. They are all of a fabulous nature and we do hope you
will have a chance to see one of them being milked after they have
calved. All our cows are due to calve in May and June this
Come and see our milking demonstrations every day at 2pm
(we're closed Monday)
Our flock of 45 ewes lamb once a year in March/April which is
one of our farming calendar highlights. It is certainly hard to
beat the sight of a lamb full of the joys of Spring leaping and
racing in the sunshine!
Why not come and learn more about our sheep during our lambing
week in April.
We couldn’t leave out one of our biggest characters at Home
Farm. Meet Kippy, the hardworking (?) sheep dog… play ‘throw and
fetch’ with her and you’ve made a friend for life!
