Unique Visitor Experience: Sound Walk by Lucie Potter
Artist, Lucie Potter, has created a Sound Walk for Tatton Park for her oneplace residency. Recording the sounds of Tatton during the day and night, she has created a Sound Walk which leads visitors on a unique walk through the Parkland. This interactive artwork is now available for the general public to experience. Visit the Gift Shop in the Stableyard to learn more.

Further information about the research and creation of this artwork continues below:
Lucie Potter has worked part time at Tatton from December 2007 to until March 2008, as part of the oneplace residency programme.
Her research has looked at how people engage with Tatton as visitors. She has explored the different tours available and using Tatton's Parkland map has considered how visitors walk through the land, following its paths and trails.
Lucie has made field recordings of the wildlife and deer throughout the day and night and recorded the sounds of Tatton’s daily routines by walking through the land in both quiet and busy times. She has looked at different maps of the Park and Cheshire, detailing the geological history and the land’s more recent ownership and changing uses. She has placed Tatton's transformation into a landscape park within the framework of events happening in Cheshire, England and further afield, to get a sense of the cultural motivations and economic reasons behind its appearance.
She has talked to staff, past and present, and used Tatton's visitor guides and archives and the Cheshire County Records Office to build up a picture of the estate. The results of her various researches were developed into a script and Lucie worked closely with staff from the Mansion and Rangers departments and former staff and users of the park for its narration and sound effects.
This work would not have been possible without the support and help from the staff at Tatton. Special thanks to Phil Lucas and the Rangers Department for their time and assistance and to those people whose voices and knowledge contributed so much to the Sound Walk. Additional thanks to Jason the horse and the flora and fauna of Tatton whose daily and nightly activity provided the basis for the Sound Walk and in whose presence it has been a pleasure to work.
