      Parkland News

Summer 2008

Summer migrants have now arrived.  Various species of warblers can be found throughout the park, each species favouring a seperate niche to compete for food and nesting sites.

The Mute Swans, very popular with visitors and media alike, have hatched four chicks while a pair less in the limelight on Tatton Mere have hatched five. Little owls can be seen and heard throughout the day in the park and Barn owls are often seen. Most birds are now busy rearing their young and the courtship plumage of the spring now looks rather bedraggled from the rigours of parenthood.

The grassland of the Park is managed sensitively to encourage a variety of grasses, sedges and wildflowers. Speedwell and Harebell are common in the open parkland, while the woodlands host Wood Anemone and Wood Sorrel. In turn these plants encourage the presence of butterfly of which a wide variety can be found at Tatton.

The deer are now having their young and although most retreat to the deer enclosure to do this, some are born on the Park. Please to not touch them as their mother will return to them and please keep dogs under close control.

The Rangers are running a series of guided walks through summer into autumn to observe the deer at close quarters, please call 01625 374400 for details or visit the Events Listings.
